History of Ashburnham Community School, Chelsea:
Ashburnham
Community School is a single form entry primary school located in spacious
grounds in the World’s End Estate area of Chelsea, London.
The
school has a long and illustrious history, originally built opposite the Lots
Rd Power Station and named after John Ashburnham, the second Earl of Ashburnham
who acquired the land in 1767. The first Ashburnham School was built in Upcerne
Road in 1885. This site is now occupied by the new Chelsea Academy. Ashburnham
School relocated to its current site in Blantyre St in 1972 when it was likely
that the old school might be needed to be demolished to accommodate the new
West Cross route. However, this road was never built.
The
school was designed as a single story brick building in keeping with the
proposed designs for the surrounding estate by Eric Lyons (1912-1980) who was
responsible for designing more than 70 estates across the UK and was also
president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His designs were
typified by their generous use of open space, a legacy which benefits the
school in the form of one of the largest primary playgrounds in Kensington and
Chelsea. It also means we are the only school in the borough with no steps or
stairs!
